The Baird Government has again back-flipped on a decision in response to a community campaign to expand Blenheim Park.
Earlier this month, the Department of Planning finally submitted a community backed plan to expand parkland at Blenheim Park by 2000 sqm for gateway determination. Originally, the Government had decided to back a developers plan to rezone the same land to high density residential.
The Deputy Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for Planning, Michael Daley, was thankful for the community's passion on this matter "This decision is a win for common sense and again shows that Mike Baird and his Government are out of touch. The Government has always had a choice on this matter: to either side with the community or with developers.
"Having originally sided with developers, anything could have happened here. Thankfully the community stood up and won.
"This backflip again shows that Mike Baird is just another politician, willing to overturn any decision he makes out of principle, in order to garner more votes."
Clr Laxale also praised Ryde locals for their part in the victory. "Without the support of residents, we would have not had this win.
"With more backflips than a Russian gymnast, I'd now ask Mike Baird to reverse other bad decisions for Ryde. He could start by looking at the below 5 issues:
- Stop the sale of public housing at Ivanhoe Estate
- Halt plans to build a multi-storey carpark on Eastwood Oval
- Build a High School instead of a Primary School at Smalls Road
- Overturn a decision to reduce the Emergency Department's capability at Ryde Hospital
- Stop Council Amalgamations which will lead to a rate increase of upto 31% for Ryde residents.
"If it is good enough to listen to the community on one issue, then Mike Baird needs to listen to the community on other issues that matter."
