For years the Ryde Liberals and their water front property owning mates tried to stop the City of Ryde from building the missing link along the Ryde Riverwalk.

From false claims that Council was stealing private land, to calling the construction of a footpath a "socialist plot", to infinite and empty threats of legal action, the Liberals and their supporters tried every trick in the book.

Their final, desperate attempt was to pretend to be environmentalists in the photo below.

While the Liberals were screeching, Councillor Penny Pedersen and I were working with Council Staff to use the Riverwalk project to further protect this amazing owl and its habitat.

They tried to wedge me and my team, saying that if we built the walk that Powerful owls would be endangered, and that the City of Ryde would be responsible. Well, I'm pleased to release today some new landscaping plans endorsed by Birdlife Australia, Australia's most prominent Powerful Owl experts.

In consultation with them, Council staff have come up with a plan to protect this important roosting site, plant beautiful native trees and install a few bird perches which will help young owls learn to fly.

With consultation to start in February, if all goes well, works are scheduled to be completed in time for the roosting season in April 2021.

You see, the truth is the Liberals didn't really give two hoots about the Powerful Owl (see what i did there).

All they cared about was helping private landowners stop you accessing public land and stopping you enjoying the Ryde Riverwalk.

Thanks to my colleagues on Council staying true to their beliefs, and backing this project.
